You’re all set
We prescribed norethindrone to help delay your period for a short time (such as for travel or an event).
What this medication does
Norethindrone is a progestin (a hormone similar to progesterone). When taken before your period starts, it can help delay menstrual bleeding until you stop the medication.
This medication is meant for short-term cycle delay only. It does not permanently change your cycle.
How to take it
- Take 1 tablet by mouth 3 times daily with a meal (breakfast, lunch, and dinner).
- Start the medication at least 3 days before your expected period begins.
- Continue daily dosing for up to 10 days.
- Your period usually returns within 2–3 days after stopping.
- If bleeding has already started, norethindrone wil NOT be effective at stopping it.
Tip: For best results, take doses at evenly spaced times each day.
What to expect
- Light spotting or breakthrough bleeding
- Bloating or mild cramping
- Breast tenderness
- Headache or nausea
- Mood changes or irritability
These effects are usually temporary and resolve after stopping the medication.
Important warnings
- Norethindrone may slightly increase the risk of a blood clot, especially in people with clotting risk factors.
- Do not use this medication if you have a history of blood clots, stroke, certain cancers, or severe liver disease unless specifically cleared by your clinician.
- Some medications and supplements may reduce effectiveness (including certain seizure medications, migraine treatments, and herbal products).
- This medication is not reliable contraception and does not prevent pregnancy.
- Do not use period delay medication more than once every 3 months unless advised.
