You’re all set
We prescribed your birth control pill. Your prescription has been sent to your selected pharmacy. We recommend confirming it’s ready before you head out, especially if this is your first fill.
What this medication does
The birth control pill works by using hormones to prevent ovulation (release of an egg). It also thickens cervical mucus, making it harder for sperm to reach an egg, and thins the uterine lining, which reduces the chance of pregnancy.
When taken correctly, the pill is a highly effective and reliable method of pregnancy prevention.
How to take it
- Take one pill every day, ideally at the same time each day
- You may start today unless your clinician advised a different start date
- If starting outside the first 5 days of your period, use backup contraception (such as condoms) for the first 7 days
- If you miss a pill, follow the instructions included in your pill pack or message us through your portal
- Set a daily reminder or alarm to help maintain consistency
What to expect
- Irregular bleeding or spotting is common during the first 1–3 months
- Mild nausea, breast tenderness, or bloating may occur early on
- Some people notice changes in mood, acne, or headaches as hormones adjust
- Most side effects improve or fully resolve within a few cycles
If side effects are severe, persistent, or interfering with daily life, reach out to us. Adjustments or alternative options are available.
Important safety information
- Missing pills or taking them inconsistently lowers effectiveness
- If your pill contains estrogen, smoking significantly increases the risk of blood clots, stroke, and heart attack
- Certain medications and supplements may reduce effectiveness—tell us about any new meds
