Combined birth control pill (Daily pill with estrogen + progestin)
Combined pills help prevent pregnancy and often improve cycle control.
- Can make periods lighter, more predictable, and less painful
- Often helps with acne and hormonal symptoms
- Not recommended for everyone including those with high blood pressure, gallbladder disease, migraine with aura, higher risk for blood clots and some other medical conditions or history.
Progestin-only pill (“mini-pill”) (Estrogen-free daily option)
Progestin-only pills are often safer when estrogen is not recommended.
- Must be taken at the same time each day
- Spotting is more common in the first months
- Good postpartum, breastfeeding or migraine-safe option
Birth control patch (Weekly option instead of daily pills)
The patch is worn on the skin and changed weekly.
- No daily pill to remember
- Can be used continuously to skip periods if desired
- May be less effective over 200 lbs or BMI > 30
Vaginal ring (Monthly low-maintenance option)
The ring is inserted at home and replaced monthly.
- Great for people who forget pills
- Can often be used continuously to skip bleeding
- Must be comfortable inserting/removing
Emergency contraception (Plan B / Ella) (Backup after unprotected sex or missed pills)
Emergency contraception lowers pregnancy risk after sex.
- Plan B works best within 72 hours
- Ella works up to 5 days and closer to ovulation
- Not intended as regular birth control
Period Delay (Norethindrone) (Short-term cycle delay for travel or events)
A temporary option to help delay bleeding when started early enough.
- Start at least 3 days before your expected period
- Taken 3x daily with meals for up to 10 days
- Not birth control and does not prevent pregnancy
Phexxi® vaginal gel (Non-hormonal, used only before sex)
Phexxi is a prescription gel used up to 1 hour before sex.
- No hormones
- Must be used every time you have sex
- Works best combined with condoms+
Hormone Replacement Care Both hormonal and non hormonal symptom management options
Hormonal options – Estrogen and Progesterone
- Pills, patches, and vaginal treatments
- Systemic options treat whole-body symptoms (like hot flashes)
- Vaginal treatments focus on dryness and discomfort
Non-hormonal options
- Options do not contain estrogen or progesterone
- Prescription treatments that manage symptoms without hormones
- May help with hot flashes, mood, and sleep
