You’re all set

We prescribed emergency contraception. Please pick it up and take it as soon as possible for best effectiveness.

What this medication does

Emergency contraception (EC) works by delaying or preventing ovulation (the release of an egg). If ovulation has not yet occurred, EC can significantly reduce the chance of pregnancy.

EC does not end an existing pregnancy and will not harm a pregnancy that has already started.

How to take it

  • Take the medication as soon as possible after unprotected sex or contraceptive failure
  • EC works best when taken early, but may still be effective up to 5 days (120 hours) after unprotected intercourse.
  • If you vomit within 2 hours of taking the dose, contact us—you may need another dose
  • You can resume or start regular birth control after taking EC, but backup protection may be needed

Tip: EC is a time-sensitive medication. Sooner is always better.

What to expect

  • Nausea, fatigue, headache, or breast tenderness
  • Light spotting or bleeding
  • Your next period may be earlier or later than expected
  • Your next period may be heavier or lighter than usual

These effects are usually temporary. If your period is more than 7 days late, take a pregnancy test.

Important information

  • Emergency contraception does not protect against future sex
  • It does not protect against sexually transmitted infections (STIs)
  • Using condoms or starting regular birth control helps prevent future pregnancy risk
  • EC should not be used as your primary method of birth control

Emergency care

Seek emergency medical care immediately for severe or persistent lower abdominal pain, very heavy bleeding (soaking a pad or tampon every hour), dizziness or fainting, shoulder pain, or any sudden or severe symptoms of any kind. For mental health emergencies call the 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline.
