You’re all set

We prescribed the birth control patch. Your prescription has been sent to your pharmacy. We recommend confirming it’s ready before pickup, especially if this is your first time using the patch.

What this medication does

The birth control patch releases estrogen and progestin hormones through the skin and into the bloodstream. These hormones prevent ovulation (release of an egg), thicken cervical mucus to block sperm, and thin the uterine lining to reduce the chance of pregnancy.

When used correctly, the patch is a highly effective, weekly form of birth control that does not require daily dosing.

How to use the patch

  • Apply one patch once a week on the same day each week for 3 weeks in a row
  • Week 4 is patch-free; this is when a withdrawal bleed may occur
  • Apply the patch to clean, dry, hair-free skin on the abdomen, buttock, upper outer arm, or upper torso (not breasts)
  • Press firmly for at least 10 seconds to ensure full adhesion
  • If starting outside the first 5 days of your period, use backup contraception for the first 7 days

What to expect

  • Mild skin irritation or redness at the patch site
  • Spotting or irregular bleeding during the first 1–3 months
  • Breast tenderness, nausea, or headache as hormones adjust
  • Side effects usually improve with continued use

Rotate patch sites each week to reduce skin irritation. If side effects are persistent or bothersome, message us through your portal.

Important safety information

  • If the patch partially or fully falls off, replace it immediately and follow package instructions
  • If the patch is off for more than 24 hours, backup contraception may be needed
  • Effectiveness may be reduced at higher body weights—contact us if you have concerns
  • Smoking increases the risk of serious cardiovascular events when using estrogen-containing birth control
  • This medication does not protect against sexually transmitted infections (STIs)
