You’re all set
We prescribed the birth control ring. Your prescription has been sent to your pharmacy. We recommend confirming it’s ready before pickup, especially if this is your first time using the ring.
What this medication does
The birth control ring releases estrogen and progestin hormones locally while it is in place. These hormones prevent ovulation (release of an egg), thicken cervical mucus to block sperm, and thin the uterine lining to reduce the chance of pregnancy.
When used correctly, the ring provides consistent, low-dose hormone delivery without daily dosing.
How to use the ring
- Insert the ring into the vagina and leave it in place for 3 continuous weeks
- Remove the ring for 1 ring-free week; a withdrawal bleed may occur during this time
- Insert a new ring on the same day of the week and around the same time as your previous cycle
- If starting outside the first 5 days of your period, use backup contraception for the first 7 days
- If the ring is out for more than 3 hours, rinse it with cool to lukewarm water, reinsert it, and use backup contraception for 7 days
What to expect
- Mild vaginal discharge or increased awareness of the ring, especially at first
- Spotting or irregular bleeding during the first 1–3 months
- Breast tenderness, nausea, or headaches as hormones adjust
- Most users do not feel the ring once it is properly positioned
These effects typically improve within a few cycles. If symptoms are persistent, uncomfortable, or concerning, message us through your portal.
Important safety information
- Leaving the ring out too long reduces effectiveness
- Smoking increases the risk of serious cardiovascular events when using estrogen-containing birth control
- Certain medications may reduce effectiveness—notify us of any new prescriptions
- This medication does not protect against sexually transmitted infections (STIs)
